Getting excited about MATH!
As part of the Grade 1 Math Curriculum, students have begun learning all about collecting data and using different types of graphs to record information. As stated by the Ontario Curriculum Expectations, Standard 1m73 requires that students are able to 'collect and organize primary data that is categorical and display the data using one-to-one correspondence, prepared templates of concrete graphs, and pictographs, and a variety of recording methods.' Standard 1m74 states that student will 'read primary data presented in concrete graphs and pictographs, and describe data using comparative language.'The following site offers a number of excellent activities and ideas which can be done within the home to allow parents to help their students grasp the concept of collecting data and using different types of graphs.
STUDENTS,
Practice collecting data and making graphs at home by asking your family questions such as, "What is your favourite colour? What is your favourite animal?" Gather this information and practice making all different types of graphs at home. Bar graphs, Pictographs, Line graphs...YOU CHOOSE! Feel free to bring these graphs into class and share them with the rest of your classmates. Be sure to share with your family the data we collected in class and fill them in on the the Class' Favourite Season!
Can you guess what type of graph this is?
